Classification of hydro power plants; Planning and Development Process; Hydrology and Hydraulic Design Concept; Dams; Spillways; Conduits, Intake, Power house and Accessories; Hydraulic Turbines.  


Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to

Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION ,HISTORY AND CLASSIFICATION OF HYDRO POWER

  •  Explain the working principle of hydro power
  • Differentiation each classification of hydro power plant
  •  Identify and explain components of hydro power plant with their corresponding function
  • Differentiate advantage and disadvantage of hydropower plant

Chapter 2:HYDRO POWER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

  • Describe the planning process of hydropower projects
  • Identify drivers and barriers of hydropower development around the world
  •  Explain ancillary service of HPP in electrical power system
  •  Compare and contrast social and environmental impact of HPP.

Chapter 3:  HYDROLOGY FOR HYDRO POWER

  • Define hydrology , explain hydrological  cycle
  • Describe why hydrological study is needed for hydro power development
  • Differentiate different methods of flow measurement technique
  • Differentiate between mass curve , flow duration curve and hydro graph
  • explain factors affecting run off
  • Methods used to measure surface run off

            Chapter 4: SPILL WAY IN HYDROPOWER

  • Explain the main function of spillway
  • Differentiate different types/classification of spillways
  •  Analyze the spillway design related to dam type
  • Write down factors that affect design of spillway
  • Compare different types of energy dissipaters

            Chapter 5: HYDRO POWER WATER CONVEYANCE SYSTEM

  • Differentiate different water conveyance components( intake structure , water conducting system, out flow structure)
  • Describe essential features of water power plant (catchment area, storage ,dam , intake structure, valve &gate, power house)
  • Know design consideration for intake structure and etc

Chapter 6: WATER TURBINES

  • Identify different types of turbines
  • Describe the difference between turbine technology
  • Explain selection criteria of water turbine

Chapter 7: ELECTRO-MECHANICAL COMPONENTS OF HYDRO POWER PLANT

  • Identify electro-mechanical components in hydro power
  • Describe the function of each electro-mechanical components
