Course Description:

This course aims at exploring the fundamental principles of power system protection and control. Therefore, the operating principles and design considerations of protective devices and protection systems are elaborated; protection mechanisms of transmission lines, generators, motors and transformers are explored; different types of protection schemes are discussed; coordination of protective systems for sequential operation will be dealt with; and power system controls including automatic generation and voltage control, active power and frequency control, economic dispatching, and unit commitment will be addressed.

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students should be able to

·         Understand the principle of operation of transducers, relays and circuit breakers

·         Design and determine the appropriate relays and breakers

·         Understand the different protection mechanisms of generators, motors, transmission lines and transformers  and choose the appropriate type for a protection requirement

·         Know how to coordinate several protection systems for a sequential operation

·         Understand automatic generation and voltage control, active power and frequency control, economic dispatching, and unit commitment.
